) - A move by Crimean MPs to vote on a referendum of joining the Russian Federation has been called illegal by Ukraine, the European Union and the United States.
Crimean parliament declared on Thursday “to enter into the Russian Federation with the rights of a subject of the Russian Federation” via referendum.
The EU threatened ‘serious consequences’ if Russia did not act to de-escalate the growing conflict in Ukraine.
Crimean MPs have scheduled voting on the referendum for March 16.
During a press conference, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said the referendum was in contradiction to Ukraine’s parliament and therefore illegal.
