) - Pro-Russian protesters in Donetsk who have seized control of a regional government building have declared the city a ‘people’s republic’.
The protesters have called for a referendum on secession from Ukraine on May 11.
Ukraine is sending officials to Donetsk, Luhansk and Kharkiv after Pro-Russian protesters seized control of local government buildings.
In an address on national TV, Interim President Oleksandr Turchynov said the protests were "the second wave" of a Russian operation to destabilise Ukraine, overthrow the government and disrupt planned elections.
Last month Crimea seceded from Ukraine and joined the Russian Federation by referendum. Crimea annexation was largely opposed by the West resulting in sanctions against Russia.
