) - Thousands of protesters took to the streets of Istanbul on Thursday to mark International Labor Day or to what is also commonly referred to as May Day.
In Istanbul’s Taksim Square, police clashed with protesters who attempted to break through a police barricade. The square has been a scene of protests that have been taking place for months.
After giving a final warning, hundreds of riot police backed up by water-cannon moved in on protesters in the Besiktas district as the protesters attempted to break through the barricades leading up to the square.
Similar rallies also took place around the world with reports of tens of thousands taking to the streets of Moscow, Hong Kong, Jakarta, Seoul and other major cities.
Russia staged a huge May Day parade on Moscow's Red Square for the first time since the Soviet era on Thursday.
