) - Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree recognizing Crimea as a ‘sovereign and independent’ state on Monday. The decree is created one day after the Crimea voted to separate from Ukraine and join the Russian Federation as part of a referendum.
Russia said they would respect the results of the referendum.
Ukraine, the European Union and the United States have rejected the referendum as illegal.
Earlier, Crimean parliament formally declared independence from Ukraine.
The EU and US imposed a number of sanctions on Russian and Ukrainian officials on Monday.
